ZERO

WATER WASTE

Our business depends on the availability of clean water. No water, no beer. We are actively taking measures to reduce water consumption.

The Carlsberg Group has set targets to halve water use at our breweries by 2030, and reduce it by 25% by 2022.

CARLSBERG GROUP TARGETS

2030

2022

  • 50% reduction in water usage at our breweries
  • Partner to safeguard shared water resources in high-risk areas
  • 25% reduction in water usage at our breweries
  • Explore going below 2.0 HL/HL at all high-risk breweries

Our approach towards ZERO

The brewing process requires a great volume of water. That is why we focus on cutting our water usage.

Our targets in the field of water consumption set the course for years to come. We are already taking steps to achieve them: we are making improvements through the establishment of reuse and water reverse supply for technical needs, the use of modern technologies at our production sites and the search for innovative solutions.

A key task of the Carlsberg Young Scientists Community, formed in early 2018, will be development of innovative solutions that will help us achieve our targets.

Supporting global goals

As a global brewer with operations in high-risk areas, we have a responsibility to ensure both the success of our business and the well-being of the communities around our breweries.

Our targets for ZERO water waste contribute to SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation. We address targets SDG 6.4 and 6.5 – increasing water use efficiency and implementing integrated water resource management. Our community engagement plans show our commitment to partnership and SDG 17.

Actions towards ZERO

Building wastewater treatment facilities

We have acting wastewater treatment facilities at our four breweries. In 2017, we started construction of modern complexes at the sites in St Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Rostov-on-Don, where wastewater was treated at the municipal sewer systems.

Only last year, total investments amounted to almost 690 mln rubles.
