Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974 Brewery

«Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974» Brewery was created on the basis of Novaya Zarya brewery that was built in 1974 as a state enterprise with the annual capacity of 7.2 mln liters. Like many other breweries in the USSR the brewery in Rostov produced the beer brands approved by GOST: Zhigulevskoye, Rizhskoye, Moskovskoye, Slavyanskoye as well as products developed by the brewery itself: Debyut, Lyuks, To Samoye and Donskoye.

In August 1991, the brewery was reorganized into Rostov Donskoye Pivo Brewery leased enterprise. In 1993 the enterprise was privatized and reorganized into an open joint-stock company. By 1997 Baltika Breweries had purchased the controlling interest of Donskoye Pivo OJSC and started active reconstruction of the enterprise and investments in production. In 1999 the enterprise changed its name for Baltika-Don OJSC and was later renamed Baltika-Rostov brewery. In 2017 the enterprise changed its name for Brewery «Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974».

Responsible producer

Since 1998 the brewery has implemented a number of investments of over USD 180 mln. For example, since 2006 the brewery has implemented investment projects for the reconstruction of the elevator, installation of equipment for non-alcoholic beer production, increasing the keg line capacity, installation of one-liter PET-bottle equipment, installation of the canning line.

The current annual capacity of the brewery is 5.6 mln. hectoliters; the territory of the brewery occupies approx. 13 hectares. There are 2 bottling lines, 1 canning line, 2 PET and 1 keg filling line.

The brewery is one of the major budget revenue generating enterprises of the Southern Region. In 2012 the tax deductions into the budget of Rostov region amounted to about RUB 6 bln.

Since the establishment of The Best Enterprise of Rostov-on-Don competition brewery «Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974» has been twice awarded the cup of The Best Food Industry Enterprise. Brewery «Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974» was the first food enterprise in Rostov region to undergo the quality management certification for conformity to GOST R ISO-9001 requirements in 2001.

Responsible employer

The brewery employs about 600 people. One of the Baltika’s priorities is ensuring good working conditions for its employees. The enterprise provides meals for its employees; there is a gym on the premises. The benefits at Baltika include voluntary medical insurance, life insurance, accident insurance, food allowance, availability of equipped medical facilities, additional sick leave benefits, etc.

Brand portfolio

Today brewery «Yuzhnaya Zarya 1974» produces more than a dozen and a half various beer brands, including popular Russian brands: Baltika and Arsenalnoye, Nevskoye, Cooler, Zhigulevskoye, and regional Don brand. The distribution scale is quite big: the Southern Federal District, the North Caucasian Federal District, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Turkmenistan.

The regional Don brand is a repeated winner of the competition “The Best Products of the Don Region” and “Russia’s 100 Best Products”.

Community Engagement

Being one of the leaders of the brewing industry in the region, the enterprise also sets standards in industrial ecology, labour protection, and corporate social responsibility. Since 2012 the employees together with volunteers and environmental activists clean up the banks of the Don and the Kuban rivers within the framework of the Seven Rivers initiative organized under the auspices of the Sochi-2014 Organizing Committee. In 2013 the employees of the enterprise gathered, sorted and sent more than 1 tonne of solid domestic waste for processing from the banks of the Don and the Kuban rivers.

Besides, since 2006 the brewery has been involved in:

Beer Patrol public control actions to prevent beer sales to the underage;
Implementation of the Drive Sober program promoting responsible driving;
Beer Sommelier edutainment project forming beer consumption culture and thematic brewery tours;
Provision of financial support to disadvantaged social groups, for example, to the Council of Veterans in Sovetsky District (Rostov-on-Don).
